Last weekend the 13th edition of the Dutch Dance Festival took place. We are very contented and like to share some high lights with you.
Awards presented at Gala of Dutch Dance
The Swans 2010 were awarded during the Gala of Dutch Dance on Saturday 2 October. The Golden Swan – a lifetime-achievement award – went to choreographer Krisztina de Châtel. Dancer Heather Ware won the Swan for Most Impressive Dance Performance 2010, while Mourning, staged by the Internationaal Danstheater, received the Swan for Most Impressive Dance Production 2010. This production had also opened the Dutch Dance Festival. Finally, the current wearer of the Jirí Kylián Ring, Michael Schumacher, passed it on to lighting designer Ellen Knops. “One of Ellen Knops’ most significant contributions to the dance world is that she makes visible the dance of light.” ~ Michael Schumacher

The Gala of Dutch Dance featured no fewer than four new choreographies. Ted Brandsen (Dutch National Ballet), Wies Bloemen (Danstheater AYA) and Club Guy & Roni had all created their own choreographies to Alexandra – the first very classical composition by Tom Holkenborg (Junkie XL) – performed by the Limburg Symphony Orchestra. On top of that came the première of the latest dance piece by Marco Goecke, set to the finale of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. Bonnie Doets and Mitchell-lee van Rooij from Scapino Ballet Rotterdam danced the opening duet Firebird pas de deux.

Earlier in the day, Muhanad Rasheed had been presented with the Award of the Dutch Dance Festival Maastricht 2010 by Maastricht’s Cultural Affairs Alderman J. Costongs. The prize included a sum of €12,000 made available by the City of Maastricht. The prize money will be used for creating a new choreography to be performed at the Dutch Dance Festival 2011. The ceremony took place at the Timmerfabriek in Maastricht, following the première of Blade Runner by Erik Kaiel, the 2009 recipient of the award.

Sunday saw the performance of the festival-specific production Vaslav Nijinsky, created by the Dutch National Ballet and writer Arthur Japin. This unique collaborative effort at the Derlon Theater pulled in the crowds. The production alternated dance segments from Krzsystof Pastor’s choreography about Nijinski with excerpts from the novel Vaslav read out by its author Arthur Japin.
