Act Your Age
Act Your Age was a two-year international project, supported by the Culture Programme of the European Commission, where the older person was placed at the centre stage by the partners Dance House Lemesos (Cyprus), OperaEstate Festival (Italy) and the Dutch Dance Festival. The project was striving to offer alternatives - new images, insights and knowledge - to contradict the dominant imagery and attitudes towards the elderly, with professional dance as a starting point. Finland, Turkey and Ireland were also involved in Act Your Age as well as Italy, the Netherlands and Cyprus.
Questions, longing and fear in relation to ageing are central in Act Your Age. Older people were literally and figuratively given a podium in 2012 and 2013 by the twelve participating choreographers. Act Your Age was creating an exchange between European senior citizens, young choreographers, health care professionals, academics and a broad audience in a two-year programme of artistic investigation, workshops and expert and community symposia. The project concluded in December 2013 with the Act Your Age Festival in Maastricht. The three day festival offered provocative dance productions with older performers, lectures from top scientists and European opinion leaders, and stimulating workshops from various experts on aging. The older person was, of course, at the centre of the festival as the expert from the university of life.
