Polina Skarga & Maxime Kuznetsov | Liam McCall | Courtney May Robertson
Danskerk: Dutch Mavericks

On Saturday, October 4, the iconic Sint Janskerk at the Vrijthof square will be transformed into the Danskerk for one day. In this tranquil location, we will create a concentrated, almost magical place where dance can be experienced in its purest form. Without illusion, decor, or theater lighting. As audience, you will be sitting close to the dance floor, right next to the dancers. So close that even the smallest details become visible and you can feel the dancers' humanity and vulnerability under your own skin.

A maverick is someone who thinks and acts in a completely independent, unorthodox way—always different from what you would expect. There are fine examples of this in Dutch dance. Are they the forerunners of new developments? Maybe. But even without that, there is much to enjoy in their work, which follows only its own logic.

Polina Skarga & Maksim Kuznetsov - The End (premiere)

What happens with you after your dream, once luminous in anticipation, settles into reality? The beauty of ending - this after taste which follows after the experience freshly happened. Is it two of them? Or how many characters, emotions and destinies cross in this experimental dance piece? Follow the whisper of the foot prints, when the one end opens the gates of new beginning.

Maksim Kuznetsov and Polina Skarga come together in an experimental duet, a meeting of two distinct worlds: Maksim who entered the theatre scene from a breaking background, and Polina, who grew up in contemporary and modern dance styles. Together, they keep the stage open, letting the experience slowly unfold.

Liam McCall - pparrallell

One of the mavericks is Liam McCall, who appeared twice at the Nederlandse Dansdagen two years ago: nominated for a Swan Award for the most impressive dance performance and as choreographer of the duet Refraction [breaking light]. This year he returns with another duet, pparrallell, created for NextSteps, the acclaimed collaboration between ISH Dance Collective and the Junior Company, where choreographers work with a mixed cast of hip hop dancers and ballet dancers. pparrallell is a duet in which Liam’s maverick spirit bridges the differences between the dance styles with ease.

Courtney May Robertson - Work in progress: BANSHEE (working title)

Take a glimpse into the earliest stirrings of Courtney May Robertson’s new performance BANSHEE (working title), set to premiere in March 2027. Drawing on romanticized and eroticized depictions of corpses in art, the work investigates grief, gendered violence, and cultural portrayals of womxn’s bodies as passive and consumable. Rooted in personal loss and Celtic ancestry, it seeks sites of reckoning and reclamation. In this special preview, Robertson presents raw movement and sound material in development: deconstructed folk dance experiments entwine with a visceral soundscape where the ancient lament of Scottish bagpipes collides with the abrasive intensity of Noise Music.
