About Cheroney
Cheroney Pelupessy (1990) explores how stories from the past still live on in our bodies. Through her performances, Cheroney creates connections. She builds bridges between different styles, generations, and art forms. In her pitch, she collaborates with Kurdish-Indonesian dancer and creator Melisa Diktaş to explore, among other things, their shared Indonesian background. Together, as they work on the creation of her new performance, Mewaktu, they embark on a journey of discovery into how their embodied knowledge and cultural history come together.
From the jury report: “In recent years, Cheroney has worked on developing a unique movement language. She has done this by researching the movement vocabulary within her cultural and ethnic roots. She has combined this with her background in Western contemporary dance, giving rise to a style that is distinctly her own. By making the personal universal, each performance leaves a deep impression on her audience.”
