Terecht (12+) by Maarten Smit and Davey Bakker

Terecht (12+) by Maarten Smit i.c.w. Davey Bakker (Wabi Sabi Theater i.c.w. Het Houten Huis, Stichting Herstel en Terugkeer) is nominated for the Jonge Zwaan meest indrukwekkende jeugddansproductie 2025.

Jury about the nomination

''Terecht is an impressive performance, in which the audience is taken into the world of the criminal justice system from start to finish. The three performers switch characters at a rapid pace, making inventive use of a set consisting of (extended) cubes. They control their bodies down to the smallest details and use their physical expression to evoke emotions and tensions. The jury is deeply impressed by the way in which text, dance, sound and set are interwoven in this urgent performance. The audience is challenged to constantly change perspective, creating a layered theatre experience.''

About Maarten Smit

Maarten Smit (1977, Groningen) graduated from the acting programme in Arnhem in 2001. As a theatre maker/actor, he has worked with various companies, such as theatre collective Alaska, Het Laagland, NNT, Ro Theater and Tryater, and collective De Jongens in Groningen and Het Houten Huis.

In 2016, he directed the play “Thuis in Hoogeveen” at Loods13, about and by 22 Syrian refugees who came to live in Hoogeveen. The play was nominated for the cultural participation award.

Shaping a social theme fascinated him and proved to fit his visual and musical style. In 2019, he directed the performance “Blinde Vlek” in collaboration with Het Houten Huis and founded the WabiSabitheater foundation to further develop his vision of physical performances about social imperfections and to realise them together with other (cultural) institutions.

In 2023, Maarten was nominated for the Groningen Talent Prize with Wabi Sabi Theater. 'TERECHT' was nominated for the Gouden Krekel and Jonge Zwaan Most Impressive Dance Production 2025. Since 2024, Wabi Sabi Theater has been structurally subsidised by the FPK and has established itself in Assen as the resident company of Cultural Centre De Nieuwe Kolk.

In 2025, Wabi Sabi Theater collaborated with HIIIT and Het Houten Huis on the
new production CONTRA. In 2026, CONTRA went on a theatre tour.
