IBE Toprock & Footwork Battle 2026
This year, IBE is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this anniversary, ND and IBE are jointly organising the IBE Toprock & Footwork battle. A thrilling battle that will reach its climax this evening in the Finals.
Breakdancing, also known as breaking, consists of four main elements: toprock, footwork, power moves and freezes. For many breakers, toprock and footwork are the essence of the dance. Within breaking culture, it is therefore often said that a performance without these two elements cannot be considered complete breaking. With the IBE Top Rock & Footwork Battle, IBE and the members of the Heerlen-based breaking crew HFC are organising a unique competition centred on both disciplines. The participants will first compete against each other in separate rounds for top rock and footwork, after which they will combine both styles in a decisive battle.
Basics of breaking
Footwork
Footwork, also known as downrock, takes place on the floor. The dancer supports themselves with their hands and performs rhythmic, controlled movements with their legs and hips. Speed, precision, creativity and fluid transitions are essential here.
Toprock
Toprock is the standing opening section of a breaking routine. The dancer sets the rhythm, showcases their personal style and prepares for the floorwork. Fast footwork patterns, expressive arm movements and variations in posture enhance the music and the dancer’s own style.
