Work session: Dance and Cultural Identity

In a candid and inspiring conversation among three key figures, a discussion explores how dance not only reveals identity but also questions it, can change it, and reshapes a narrative—sometimes within existing frameworks, and sometimes precisely beyond them.

There is a dynamic interaction between culture and identity that always remains open-ended. Building on this, the question of power arises: Which artistic and institutional frameworks influence how cultural identities are given space within the field of dance?

It also raises questions about how we view dance. From what frames of reference do we evaluate works? What aesthetic standards do we take for granted? And what happens when a movement language does not fit within dominant frameworks?
