Preliminary Rounds: The Battle
A battle tailored for fans of improvisational dance.
The most spectacular battle in Dutch dance returns to the Danstent on Saturday with the qualifying rounds for the Open Your Mind Top 12.
The Open Your Mind Battle kicks off with twelve dancers. Six dancers are invited by by the organisers and six will qualify on the day itself, judged by a panel of expert. Watch as impressive talents try to secure a spot in this unique improvisation battle. Then attend the experimental performance competition and find out who will take home the prize.
This programme is a collaboration between the Dutch Dance Days and the Sample Culture Foundation.
OYM's origins lie in the hip-hop battle scene, where the DJ selects the music and the judges choose the best dancers each round. Jury and audience sit in the Danstent in a 360-degree circle around the stage, close to the dancers' skin, requiring each improviser to consider all directions. The competition begins with 12 dancers, after which the number is halved in each round, until the final between the two best dancers. The winner takes it all, namely the prestigious OYMT12 €1000 prize!
