Kalpanarts | Rumah-Afra
Yes, I am
On this special evening, in the intimate Bovenzaal, we present two female artists who create powerful, groundbreaking and deeply personal work rooted in their cultural identity. Kalpana Raghuraman and Afra Ernst blend contemporary dance with their roots. Their work explores the personal struggle to be seen, the dynamics between tradition and modernity, and the question of belonging – or not belonging. They assert their right to exist and transform the pain and shadows of the past into strength on stage.

Mijn Wayang en ik – Rumah - Afra
Mijn Wayang en Ik is a dance performance about how the past continues to haunt us. About tension that becomes trapped in the body, exclusion and the pain of not being accepted. But it is also about the power of imagination and the desire to break free from what once was. Last year, after 18 years, Afra Ernst flew back to Indonesia, where she was born. She had always wondered why she and her mother had left: her gut feeling turned out to be right – it was a matter of necessity. A past that looms over her like a shadow and one that Afra, no matter how hard she tries, cannot let go of.

Whisper - Kalpanarts
The solo piece Whisper depicts the whisper-soft signals of the human body, which are often overlooked in the medical world. Drawing on the Indian perspective on health, in which body and mind are viewed as a single whole, the work advocates an approach that brings together intuition, tradition and knowledge, and thus goes beyond merely treating symptoms. Kalpana sees a parallel with Kali, the Indian goddess of power and destruction, but also of transformation, who turns pain into strength.
