Yoko Haveman
A TRIBUTE TO EVERYTHING THAT BREAKS
In A TRIBUTE TO EVERYTHING THAT BREAKS, you step into a dark, cinematic world in which a single body struggles to stay afloat. The performance explores the tension between control and breaking free, between vulnerability and strength. What happens when you no longer fit the image others have of you?
Haveman operates at the intersection of performance, visual art and dance, drawing inspiration from the atmosphere and intensity of neo-noir anime. The performance explores how violence, power and resistance manifest themselves in popular visual culture, but also within the body itself. Here, the body becomes a space where memories, change and imagination converge.
Rather than portraying a character who is either docile or monstrous, Haveman instead demonstrates just how complex identity can be. The result is a multi-layered performance in which a person slowly regains control of their own life.
The electronic and ambient music by Mara Lalihatu, known for Animistic Beliefs, is complemented by Chieljan van der Hoek’s lighting design. Together, they construct a world that is at times dreamlike and at times jarring.
A TRIBUTE TO EVERYTHING THAT BREAKS is a raw and compelling performance about breaking, changing and finding strength anew.
