Space of Becoming
What happens when artists from three continents come together to bring shared histories to life once more? In Space of Becoming 2026, Sites of Memory presents an international dance theatre production about memory, resilience and connection.
This unique co-production between Sites of Memory, DOX, nATANDA Dance Theatre from Sri Lanka, and Jazzart Dance Theatre and Camissa Create from South Africa explores the intertwined histories of colonialism and slavery and their continuing impact on the present. Not as a closed chapter, but as living history that still influences societies, bodies and everyday life.
Under the direction of theatre maker Katy Streek, choreographer Luke de Kock and choreographer Kapila Palihawadana, a performance is taking shape in which each performer brings their own language, culture, history and aesthetic. Together, they create a multi-layered performance that is adapted to the specific location in which it is staged, depending on the city and country. Space of Becoming invites the audience to be more than mere spectators. You become part of an artistic encounter in which hidden stories are given space and in which reflection, healing and dialogue take centre stage.
What was once a place of imprisonment and control becomes, in this performance, a space of resilience and connection. A powerful international collaboration that demonstrates how art can help us to learn, to unlearn and, together, to redefine the meaning of the past.
