Anne Suurendonk
Emo

Suurendonk invites us to show emotions without filter and to feel without judgment.

In the performance Emo, choreographer Anne Suurendonk explores the emotional world of women. In a society where social codes often restrict women from expressing emotions explicitly, Suurendonk wonders: what happens when we let go of these social norms? The answer is a space where emotions are allowed to be fully felt and shared.

Two powerful dancers, Melisa Diktaş and Evelien Jansen, bring these emotions to life. Without shame, they make them palpable and tangible. They are at once raw and explosive, vulnerable and pure. Driven by Suurendonk's signature movement language that is full of bounces and grooves, the duet comes to life. Supported by Tom van Wee's music, the dancers take us into an experience, where we not only watch, but also feel.

Anne Suurendonk received last year's Innovation Award Nederlandse Dansdagen Maastricht, an important incentive prize from which her new performance Emo emerged. The jury sees Anne as a talented maker who, from complete dedication and devotion, knows how to touch her audience deeply.

Anne Suurendonk (Amsterdam, 1988) is a choreographer, dancer and teacher. She studied dance at the academy for theater and dance at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Quickly after this, she discovered her passion for choreography and started her development as a maker by, among other things, choreographing for students (AHK, Artez, Fontys, Codarts), doing research projects at Dansmakers Amsterdam, choreographed for Over ‘t IJ Festival.

The last couple of years Suurendonk has been working as a freelance teacher and choreographer at several dance academies in the Netherlands, where she annually makes pieces with and for students. Next to this, as a maker she does different types of projects and collaborations at DOX and was a resident choreographer at Danstheater AYA between 2020 and 2024. Here she made performances for a young audience: Bloedband, Liefde en dan.. and High.

Suurendonk's academic background combined with her love for working with beats and rhythms makes a unique, natural fusion and organic contemporary movement language, strongly driven by music. Rhythmical and dynamic. That’s the signature and characteristic of her work.
